KaBOOM Playground Build
A scene from the KaBOOM! playground build at Donigian Park in 2004
50+ Volunteers, parents and children needed to help build a playground for Merino Park!! The Watershed Council has successfully written a request to KaBOOM!, a national non-profit, to build a playground in Merino Park. KaBOOM! has teamed up with Staples to provide a new 5000 square foot playground and over 350 volunteers to help organize and build a playground for Merino Park in the Hartford and Manton section of Providence. Councilman Igliozzi contributed $7500 to help leverage the support from Staples.

This playground build is a HUGE community effort! the Watershed Council is partnering with the Providence Parks Department, Councilman Igliozzi, Providence Housing Authority, Weed and Seed, Joslin Community, the Hartford Park Residents Association, Merino Park Steward, and local residents who will help organize the day and help to recruit volunteers for the playground build. FREE T-Shirts, breakfast and lunch plus music and a raffle!!

We need 50 volunteers on May 21st from 8am to 3pm for the build and we also need 20 volunteers on May 19 from 8am to 3pm for the preparation day.

Afternoon Paddle on the Lower Woonasquatucket - Saturday, June 28, 2:30 PM

Join us for an afternoon canoe trip on the lower Woonasquatucket and see the city from a new angle! We will start at the landing on South Water Street and paddle up the Woonasquatucket River to near Eagle Street before turning around and heading back down to South Water Street. This trip will give you a new perspective on the city as we paddle past some of the mills that built this city as well as through Waterplace Park and past downtown Providence. While this is definitely an urban river, we have seen red-tailed hawks, great blue herons, Peregrine Falcons, and many other birds in this stretch of the river. The complete round trip is about 3 ½ miles.

While there is some current in the river in this area it is not enough to make it too hard to paddle upstream if you time the tides right, which are dates our designed to do. We have some canoes and kayaks available so you don't need your own, but if you have your own it will help us if you bring it. If you do bring your own canoe or kayak you MUST bring life jackets for EVERYONE who will be in the boat.

Call or email Lisa at the Watershed Council at (401) 861-9046 for details, directions and to sign up. Advance sign-up is required so that we can determine how many boats we need and keep the trip from getting too large.

Please note that advanced sign-up is required.
