Merino is a large park in the Hartford neighborhood of Providence.
It is connected to the Manton neighborhood by the Sheridan Street pedestrian
bridge. The park was unused and neglected for many years, it was used for
illegal activities and families no longer felt safe there. The City of
Providence decided to reclaim the space and spent time and money to clean
it up, plant new grass, install playground equipment, basketball courts,
and picnic tables.
The Woonasquatucket River Greenway comes through this park. The
park has been the focus of clean-ups and programming by the River Ranger
youth program that the Greenway Project coordinates. The Greenway Project
has also sponsored the murals and butterfly garden that brighten the walls
near the Sheridan Street pedestrian bridge in Merino Park.
